Is it safe to get manicures and pedicures during pregnancy?
If you love your regular mani-pedi ritual, there's no need to give it up now that you're pregnant. Having your nails and toes done is a great way to pamper yourself, and the accompanying hand and leg massage that some salons offer can help minimize swelling and boost circulation.
Some moms-to-be may worry about the safety of certain chemicals found in nail polish, and it's normal to be concerned. But the truth is that while there are small amounts of scary-sounding toxic chemicals (like formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate) in nail polishes and removers, only a very insignificant amount is actually absorbed through your nail bed -- not enough to have an impact on your baby's health.
A bigger concern is that being surrounded by these polishes and removers could make you queasy, so make sure your salon is well-ventilated, or ask to sit near a door or window. --Stacey Stapleton
