How soon should I start taking birth control after having my baby?

Contraception after delivery is dependent upon breast feeding so make sure your Obstetrician knows your feeding method.  I typically see my patient at 2 weeks after delivery and ask them about contraception choices at that visit.  If they want to start oral contraception pills then we begin the appropriate type of pills at that visit so by the time they can have sex (6 weeks after delivery if everything is healed) they are protected.
