Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan is a father, author, and founder of Apartment Therapy, an interior design website that receives over 9 million monthly unique visitors in search of advice and inspiration for how to make their spaces beautiful, organized, and healthy. Before becoming an interior designer and "apartment therapist," Maxwell was a teacher. It was during his teaching career that he came to realize how a well-designed space affects a student's academic performance and behavior. When making house visits he found that the best cared for, best organized homes were also home to the best students. In 2001 Maxwell started his own design service to help people make their homes more simple, comfortable, and clutter-free. Soon after, Maxwell and his brother, Oliver Ryan, partnered to create apartmenttherapy.com, a daily blog where they could offer tips, post photos of Maxwell's design projects and answer reader's questions. Maxwell has also written a few best-selling books: Apartment Therapy: The Eight-Step Home Cure in 2006, Apartment Therapy Presents: Real Homes, Real People, Hundreds of Design Solutions in 2008, and his most successful book to date, Apartment Therapy's Big Book of Small, Cool Spaces in 2010.
