Is it safe to bring my baby into a nursing home?

Q: My grandma recently went into a nursing home. I want to bring my baby to visit her, but I am worried about germs. Is it safe to take him?

A: Most nursing homes are cleaner than other public places that you would take your child to outside the house. Like all places where others will want to touch or hold your baby, be sure that you have a bottle of hand sanitizer.  Require that it be used first before anyone plays with the baby.  The nursing home will most likely be keeping patients who are ill in their own rooms so they do not infect others, but ask management about their policies for sick residents or visitors to put your mind at ease.  Make the most of every moment that your child will get to spend with his great grandmother.
